How to Measure Your Foot

  1. Place a piece of paper on a hard floor and stand on it with your heel against a wall.
  2. Mark the tip of your longest toe (usually the big toe, but not always).
  3. Measure the distance from the wall to the mark in centimetres.
  4. Compare this measurement to the "Foot Length" column in the table above.
  5. If you are between sizes, always size up for comfort.

Tip: Measure your feet in the afternoon as feet tend to swell slightly throughout the day.

Understanding Shoe Sizing Systems

Shoe sizes vary considerably between countries, and unlike clothing sizes, there is no single international standard. The UK uses a numeric system that starts at size 0 for infants and increases in one-third inch increments. European sizing is based on the length of the last (the foot-shaped mould used to make the shoe) in Paris points, where one Paris point equals two-thirds of a centimetre.

American shoe sizes differ from UK sizes by approximately one size for men (US = UK + 1) and one and a half sizes for women (US = UK + 1.5). Japanese sizing is based directly on foot length in centimetres, making it arguably the most intuitive system for consumers.

Width fittings are also important and often overlooked. UK and US shoes are commonly available in narrow (AA/2A), standard (B/D), wide (E/2E), and extra wide (EE/4E) fittings. European brands rarely offer width fittings, which can make finding comfortable shoes more challenging for those with wider feet.

When buying shoes online from international retailers, always check the brand's specific size guide as sizing can vary between manufacturers even within the same country's system. If possible, measure your foot length and use that as your primary reference rather than relying on your usual size.
