Why the UK Still Uses Stone for Body Weight
The stone is a unit of weight equal to 14 pounds (approximately 6.35 kg). It is used almost exclusively in the United Kingdom and Ireland for measuring body weight — a cultural habit that has persisted despite metrication. While medical professionals in the UK record weight in kilograms, most British people still describe their own weight in stone and pounds.
This dual system creates a practical need for conversion. NHS weight charts, BMI calculators, and medical forms typically use kilograms, while bathroom scales sold in the UK often display all three: stone, pounds, and kilograms. Knowing how to convert between them is genuinely useful for everyday health monitoring.
Outside the UK and Ireland, the stone is not used. In the United States, body weight is described in pounds only. In continental Europe and most of the rest of the world, kilograms are the standard. This means that if you are reading a US fitness guide or a European health study, you will need to convert to make sense of the figures.
