How to Calculate Square Footage

Square footage (or square metres in metric) is the most common way to express the area of a room or property. For a rectangular room, the calculation is straightforward: multiply the length by the width. A room that is 5 metres long and 4 metres wide has an area of 20 square metres (or approximately 215 square feet).

For L-shaped rooms — which are common in UK homes, particularly in open-plan kitchen-diners — the simplest approach is to treat the room as a full rectangle and subtract the missing corner. Enter the overall dimensions of the bounding rectangle and then the dimensions of the cutout section, and the calculator will do the subtraction for you.

Knowing the square footage of a room is essential for a wide range of practical tasks: ordering flooring or carpet, calculating paint quantities, sizing a radiator, or comparing property listings. Estate agents in the UK are required to include floor area measurements in property listings, and these are typically given in square metres alongside square feet.

Note: 1 m² = 10.7639 ft² exactly. Circle area = π × r². Triangle area = ½ × base × height.
