How to Calculate Square Footage
Square footage (or square metres in metric) is the most common way to express the area of a room or property. For a rectangular room, the calculation is straightforward: multiply the length by the width. A room that is 5 metres long and 4 metres wide has an area of 20 square metres (or approximately 215 square feet).
For L-shaped rooms — which are common in UK homes, particularly in open-plan kitchen-diners — the simplest approach is to treat the room as a full rectangle and subtract the missing corner.
