UK uses mph for road speeds; most of Europe uses km/h
mph vs km/h — Why the UK Uses Miles Per Hour
The United Kingdom uses miles per hour (mph) for road speed limits and vehicle speedometers, making it one of only three countries in the world — alongside the United States and Liberia — to use the imperial mile as the standard unit of road distance. All other countries use kilometres per hour (km/h). This means that when driving in Europe, UK drivers need to be aware that speed limit signs show km/h, not mph. A sign reading 100 km/h is approximately 62 mph, not 100 mph.
The knot is the standard unit of speed used in aviation and maritime navigation. One knot is defined as one nautical mile per hour, where a nautical mile is 1,852 metres. Knots are used because they relate directly to degrees of latitude, making navigation calculations simpler. A ship or aircraft travelling at 20 knots is covering approximately 23 mph or 37 km/h.
Mach number expresses speed relative to the speed of sound. Mach 1 is the speed of sound, which is approximately 343 m/s (767 mph) at sea level at 20°C. Commercial aircraft typically cruise at around Mach 0.85, while supersonic aircraft exceed Mach 1. The Concorde cruised at approximately Mach 2, or about 1,350 mph.
