How to Calculate Flooring

Calculating the amount of flooring you need requires measuring the area of each room and adding a waste allowance to account for cuts, offcuts, and fitting errors. The waste allowance varies by flooring type: laminate and carpet typically require 10% extra, while tiles and natural stone require 15–20% due to the higher likelihood of breakage and the need for precise cuts around edges and obstacles.

For rectangular rooms, simply multiply the length by the width. For L-shaped rooms, divide the space into two rectangles, calculate each separately, and add the results together. Always measure at the widest points of the room, including any alcoves or bay windows that will be covered.

When purchasing flooring, always buy from the same batch or dye lot to ensure colour consistency. If you need to return to the shop for more flooring later, there is no guarantee the colour will match exactly. Buying slightly more than you need and keeping the offcuts for future repairs is always advisable.
