When Do You Need to Calculate Cubic Feet?

Cubic feet is a unit of volume commonly used in the UK and US for storage, shipping, and construction. If you are hiring a removal van, the company will often quote the van's capacity in cubic feet. A standard single bedroom worth of furniture typically requires around 300–400 cubic feet of van space. A three-bedroom house move usually needs 700–1,000 cubic feet.

In construction and landscaping, cubic feet is used to calculate how much material you need — whether that is concrete for a foundation, soil for a raised bed, or gravel for a driveway. To find the volume of a rectangular area, multiply length × width × depth (all in the same unit). For example, a 3m × 2m raised bed that is 30cm deep is 0.6 cubic metres, or about 21.2 cubic feet.

For shipping and freight, many carriers charge based on volumetric weight rather than actual weight. This is calculated from the package's cubic dimensions. Knowing the cubic footage of your shipment helps you estimate costs and choose the right packaging.
